The Villages
  • Getting to The Villages

Getting to The Villages:  We recommend flying to Honolulu at least one day before you depart for Christmas Island and staying overnight at a hotel. Our confirmation packet provides hotel recommendations. A Fiji Airlines flight departs from Honolulu to Christmas Island each Tuesday at noon. This weekly flight is three hours long and includes a meal. You’ll arrive on Christmas Island on a Wednesday due to crossing the International Date Line. A lodge representative will greet you at the Christmas Island International Airport and drive you to The Villages, a 30-minute drive.

Carry-On for Fiji Airways:  Bring your fly rods in a tube or case as a carry-on item. Keep your two carry-on items to a total weight of less than 15 pounds. (A purse is considered a carry-on. Please put it in your backpack before the gate to avoid check-in fees.) Click here for current Fiji Airways baggage allowances.

Departure Day:  After your fishing week, you’ll depart Christmas Island on a Wednesday at about 7:30 a.m. and arrive in Honolulu on a Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. (due to crossing the International Date Line). The package does not include airfare, hotel, or and meals in Honolulu.

  • Non-Angler Companion Packages

Non-Angler Companions:   For non-anglers, there are birdwatching, snorkeling, and photography opportunities on Christmas Island. However, The Villages functions more as a fishing camp than a luxury hotel, making it less suitable for a spouse who doesn't fish.

  • Gratuities

Gratuities:  Please plan to tip the guides and boatmen at the end of each day. (You will have a different guide daily.) The suggested tip for each guide is $60 AUD per angler per day. Each angler should tip the boatman $10 AUD. The boatman should receive at least $30 AUD per day from the group of anglers on his boat. If you receive exceptional service, feel free to tip the guides more. The recommended total staff tips are between $160 and $200 AUD per guest for the week. At the end of the week, staff gratuities should be placed in the tip box in the dining room.

  • Currency

Currency:  The official currency of Christmas Island is the Australian dollar (AUD). Please bring Australian dollars (AUDs) for tipping the guides and staff. (There is an added fee for them to exchange U.S. dollars.) You may also want to purchase local arts and crafts at the Lodge. Very seldom does anyone go into town to make a purchase. For current exchange rates, you can use the XE Currency Converter. To obtain the best exchange rate and lower fees, it is recommended to exchange your U.S. dollars for Australian dollars at your bank before traveling rather than at airport kiosks. The Lodge does not accept credit cards.

  • Deposit and Cancellation Policies

Deposit Policy:  $1,000.00 down within 14 days, and the balance is due 90 days before you arrive at The Villages.

Cancellation Policy:  The deposit can only be refunded if a suitable replacement is found by the group or individual. If a trip needs to be canceled due to an unforeseen emergency, The Villages may consider applying a credit toward a future trip.

Travel Insurance:  Fishing with Larry highly recommends trip cancellation insurance. Visit our (FWL) webpage for IMG Signature Travel Insurance and Global Rescue.

  • Trip Insurance and Medical Evacuation Coverage

Trip Insurance:  When planning your trip to the Island, it's essential to consider both trip insurance and medical evacuation coverage. You are strongly advised to purchase trip insurance. Click here for our Global Rescue and IMG Signature Insurance page. (This will take you to our FWL website.

Medical Evacuation Coverage:  All guests traveling to Christmas Island should purchase a membership to Global Rescue. In the event of a serious medical emergency, getting you off the Island for modern medical care would require chartering a private jet, which can cost between $50,000 and $100,000. Global Rescue's medical evacuation coverage provides comprehensive and reliable assistance during an emergency. Memberships start at just $139.00.

  • Required Inoculations

Inoculations:  No inoculations are required for entry. However, we advise our clients to be current with hepatitis, measles, and tetanus vaccinations. You may want to check with your local immunization and inoculation clinic or the CDC’s website for recommendations on health precautions before travel.

Yellow Fever:  The government of Christmas Island requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever. This does not include the US. If you are traveling from a country other than the US., check this list to see if you may be required to get the yellow fever vaccine: Here is the CDC’s webpage for Countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission.

  • Required Documents

    Required Documents for Christmas Island:
1.) A passport that is valid for six months beyond the last day of your trip, with one blank page for an entry stamp and
2.) A return or airline travel voucher (or sufficient funds to purchase a ticket). No visas are required for U.S. citizens for tourist visits of up to 90 days. For the most up-to-date information, visit Sherpa for the most up-to-date travel requirements.

  • Christmas Island Weather

Christmas Island is only 115 miles north of the Equator, so the weather is warm year-round. Temperatures are consistently in the low 80s during the day and 78 to 80 degrees at night. Near the Equator, sunlight is intense. We recommend bringing plenty of sun protection, a flats hat, a buff, lightweight clothing, sun or stripping gloves, and two pairs of amber, copper, or tan polarized sunglasses. While there can be a few mosquitoes around at night, for the most part, insects are not much of an issue at the Lodge.

  • Language

While English is widely used and understood, Gilbertese (also known as Kiribati) is the official language of Christmas Island. The name, Kiritimati (pronounced "Christmas"), reflects the local spelling of "Christmas" in Gilbertese.

  • Communications

Communications:  The Villages now offers complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi. It works very well. If you need to make phone calls, download the WhatsApp app. Everyone you’ll want to communicate with also needs to get the app. WhatsApp is a voice-over-internet (VoIP) service and works well.

  • Electricity

Electricity:  The Lodge has both 110V and 240V. If you’re a U.S. resident, you’ll need a power plug adapter and a voltage converter. Visit www.power-plugs-sockets.com for more information.

  • Physical Condition

Physical Condition:  You should be in good physical condition for this trip. You’ll be in a remote location with plenty of wade fishing opportunities. The Lodge can accommodate wheelchairs in special situations.
