Giant, striped, golden, dusky, and bluefin trevally can all be found at Christmas Island. When fishing inshore, you will primarily target these species, particularly along the deeper edges of the flats and on the flats themselves. Occasionally, you may catch one while trolling for tuna and wahoo offshore. Both fly and conventional anglers can have success with these fish.
Fishing Equipment: The Lodge does not provide fishing equipment. A list of what to bring is included in our confirmation packet.
A 10 to 12-weight with a floating line is ideal for trevally on the flats. Just offshore and around the coral heads, you might consider a 12-weight or 14-weight outfit for giant trevally with sinking lines or 24 to 30-foot sinking shooting heads.
Fishing License: For Christmas Island, an annual fishing license ($250) is the only option. Anglers will pay $100 USD upon arrival, and the Lodge will subsidize $150.
Boats: The Villages uses 35-foot outrigger boats with Yamaha 60-HP four-stroke outboards. (Fishing lodges on the island commonly use these Polynesian-style outrigger boats.) At 7:00 a.m. each morning, a boat takes three to five anglers and their guides to their fishing destination. If the tides are right, the guides can drive you to access spots like the Korean Wreck, which requires a two-hour truck ride each way. You can't get there by boat. Transportation is included in the package.
Guides: At The Villages, each angler has their own guide. The Villages is the only lodge on the Island that offers this. Your guide assists with spotting bonefish or trevally and improves your chances of a hookup. A boat captain will drop you and your guides on the flats. When you’re ready to move, your guide will radio the captain, and he’ll transport you to a new location. You’ll have a new guide each day. The fishing guides are local Islanders who speak English.
